Homeschooling parents wear many hats. While our primary role is that of teacher and facilitator, we may also play roles such as cafeteria lady, school janitor, or bus driver. One position we may not consider is that of their homeschool guidance counselor.

A high school guidance counselor has many jobs, but the four primary responsibilities are guiding and helping students:

• choose their high school courses and electives
• develop strong study and time management skills
• plan for college or a career after graduation
• prepare for a smooth transition into college or the workforce

As a homeschooling parent, you’ll perform many of the duties of a guidance counselor naturally and without much extra planning or research.

In today’s technology-heavy, screens-everywhere world, it can be harder than ever to get kids interested in reading. That fact can be extra difficult to come to terms with if you’re a book-loving, homeschooling parent.

That’s why I’ve come up with an idea to harness the mesmerizing power of screens to help get our kids excited about reading…by reading books made to movies!

I love watching movies based on my favorite books.

One of my biggest pet peeves as a homeschooling mom? When people (specifically non-homeschooling people) ASSUME that they know what homeschooling looks like. And if you’re reading this, that’s probably something we have in common.

People love to put mental boxes around anything that’s a little bit different, rebellious, or wild. The reason that generalizations (even the positive kind)  can be annoying for us homeschooling families is because the secret, wonderful, more complicated truth is this: homeschooling looks different for everyone and that includes what the best homeschool curriculum is for your family. The reality is that there are almost as many different ways to homeschool as there are people who choose to homeschool, and that’s part of why we love it so much!
