For many high schoolers, the words “college applications” loom like a dark cloud over senior year. These words, while possibly exciting, often hint at things foreign and unknown–the college experience. *Dun. DUn. DUN.*

Back in “my day” as a homeschooling highschooler, I remember feeling that the pressure was doubled when it came to college applications. Why? Well, looking back on it, the fear wasn’t super logical. I made great grades and was involved in plenty of extracurricular activities. Plus, my mom had enrolled me in a hybrid/homeschool-private school for my junior and senior year, specifically so that record-keeping would be entirely above-board for our state guidelines.

My daughter’s Classical Conversation’s homeschool group had professional pictures taken this year for the yearbook. In them, my 7-year-old sits primly at a desk, a neat stack of books at her side. This exact pose was repeated for all of those in her age group. The result of this was a collection of photos showing the most adorable little bunch of academics you ever saw. I’m glad to have the cute photo, and the yearbook, as a record of her co-op shenanigans this year. However, as I stood by watching the photoshoot, I giggled with my fellow homeschool moms over the formality of the background.

How to Spot a Homeschooler by Things You Find in Our Houses

“When I was growing up, we had a bat in the freezer for a couple of years,” my husband said reflectively.

This comment – which made me choke on my water – came after he opened our freezer to find the collection of rocks that our daughter had put in our freezer as “an experiment.”

I should probably preface all of this by letting you know that my husband and I were both homeschooled, and now we’re homeschooling parents. Anyway, his comment about bats in the freezer (in response to rocks in the freezer) got me thinking:

We homeschooling people really live in our houses, don’t we?

Because Sometimes Learning Stops

Learning never stops. That’s what homeschooling mamas like to say – sometimes in kind of a snippy little way. Don’t get mad. You know it’s true. Sometimes.

If you’re one of those homeschooling mamas (or dads) under whose watch learning (at least the formal variety) really does never stop, move along. There’s nothing to see here.

However, if you’re one of those homeschooling mamas at a house where formal learning comes to a screeching halt on the last day of school before summer break and your kids have entirely too much screen time all summer long and you feel guilty because learning clearly has stopped, read on.
