(To be read in the voice of David Attenborough)

The homeschooler. Enigmatic and unconventional to much of the known world, the homeschooler is most at ease in its familial tribe or among creatures with similar interests. Contrary to popular belief, the homeschooler does have the ability to blend into its surrounding environment. However, to the well-trained, observant eye, there are some distinct ways that you can spot one in the wild. Today, in continuation of my series “How to Spot a Homeschooler,” we’ll be discussing how to spot a homeschooler at the zoo.

While we have yet to gain our own exhibit, homeschoolers can often be found at the zoo.

For many homeschooling families, nature study plays a significant role in the elementary years. Then, it gives way to more serious science in the high school years. However, nature study remains relevant for high school science. That’s why I’m sharing 10 grown-up nature study ideas for teens.

10 Grown-up Nature Study Ideas for Teens
1. Zoos and Aquariums

Most zoos and aquariums have volunteer programs. Working with animals and marine life in a setting that focuses on conservation, breeding, and habitats provides an excellent way to learn about creatures that most of us aren’t going to encounter on an average nature walk.

Summer is here! That means it’s time for family trips to the beach. If you’d like to capture special memories of the sun and sand to talk about later (because shared memories are some of the best memories!), try making this beach in a jar with your children! (Be sure to keep reading for some educational activities related to the beach too!)

Several years ago, we started to create these beach in a jar keepsakes. We were looking for something to help us remember our beach days, and these unique and personalized jars were more meaningful than any other souvenirs we could find.
